On a crisp fall afternoon, Christ Child Society of Omaha, in conjunction with Catholic Charities, provided 30 new car seats to mothers in need.
Under-resourced mothers registered for what they believed to be a car seat safety class but as they arrived, they were told they would each be going home with a convertible car seat (valued at $165) for their newborns. An Injury Prevention Coordinator from Children’s Nebraska instructed the new moms on how to properly install their new car seat. Translators from the Douglas County Health Department were also on hand to translate the safety presentation to Spanish, Burmese and Karen speaking mothers.
The mothers’ smiles as they were given the car seats, which will allow them to safely travel with their young children for years to come, were nothing short of heartwarming. One mother stated that receiving the new car seat meant she would be able to take her new son to his doctor appointments. In addition to the car seats, Christ Child Society of Omaha also provided children’s books to the expecting mothers and to young siblings who were also in attendance.
